Abstract

Yield increase is one of the main factors for soybean breeding for the new cultivars release. Heritability is the parameter that indicates the genetic proportion transmitted to offspring, being very important for breeders to know the traits inheritance. The aim of this work was to estimate variances and heritability coefficients both on broad and narrow sense in F5 soybean populations. The experiment was conducted in 2010/11 season, using Federer augmented blocks design with 4 biparental crosses and intercalated checks, in Jaboticabal-SP. Data were analised using Genes Software. By the results, it can be noticed that heritability among families showed higher estimates when compared to within families estimates; this indicates that selection among families is more favorable for advancing generation. The estimation of heritability coefficients in broad sense and narrow sense were close in most of the situations, showing that the largest part of genetic variance is of additive nature, in which simple selection methods can lead to satisfactory genetic gains. High genetic variance coefficients were obtained, where the relation between genetic variance coefficient and experimental variance coefficient can be favorable to guide the selection
