This research investigates how the metatextual elaboration happens in Rubem Fonseca's short-story production, and what is the function of the utilization of this resource inside the author's work. In the texts studied, there is a questioning on the literary exercise, on the artistic tradition and on the role of the writer in the contemporary society indirectly inserted in the narrative, and the short-stories, when proposing this kind of reflection of the art on itself, turn out to become objects of at least two readings: the fictional reading and the one from the critic about this fiction. The metatextuality, hence, makes the literary text absorbs the critical discourse and, in order to achieve it, draws on several procedures as: the intertextuality, the parody and the irony, resources that exploit the duplicity of meanings, so beneficial to the metatextual work. The debate about literature built inside the literary text is the bearer of an interaction of multiple voices, crossings of texts and an array of interpretations so that several critical meanings can co-inhabit with an apparent meaning of the text, or a superficial meaning taken from a naiver reading of the narrative. This multiplicity of meanings makes the text a kind of maze in which the reader chooses the way to be followed or the meaning that will be given to the text according to some impressions indicated in the plots, with his/her own cultural repertory and reading history. Rubem Fonseca's production is thought in these terms, so that, because of the dodges of the text, we will be able to show that the work of Fonseca is very rich in reflections about the literary universe and the condition of art in the present context.

Esta pesquisa investiga como se dá a elaboração metatextual na produção contística de Rubem Fonseca e qual a função da utilização deste recurso dentro do conjunto da obra do autor. Nos textos em estudo, há um questionamento acerca do exercício literário, da tradição artística e do papel do escritor na sociedade contemporânea inserido nas entrelinhas das narrativas, e os contos, ao proporem este tipo de reflexão da arte sobre si mesma, acabam sendo objetos de pelo menos duas leituras: a ficcional e a da crítica sobre essa ficção. A metatextualidade, portanto, faz com que o texto literário absorva o discurso crítico e, para isso, recorre a diversos procedimentos, tais como: a intertextualidade, a paródia e a ironia, recursos estes que exploram a duplicidade de sentidos, tão proveitosa ao trabalho metatextual. O debate sobre a literatura elaborado dentro do texto literário é, pois, portador de uma interação de múltiplas vozes, de cruzamentos de textos e de uma série de interpretações, a ponto de diversos sentidos críticos coabitarem com um significado aparente do texto, isto é, um significado superficial, depreendido de uma leitura mais ingênua da narrativa. Essa multiplicidade de sentidos torna o texto uma espécie de labirinto, no qual o leitor escolhe o trajeto a seguir, ou melhor, o sentido a dar ao texto, de acordo com algumas marcas indicadas nos enredos, com seu próprio repertório cultural e sua bagagem de leituras. A produção de Rubem Fonseca é pensada nesses termos, de maneira que, por meio das artimanhas do texto, poderemos mostrar que a obra fonsequiana é muito rica em reflexões sobre o universo literário e sobre a condição da arte no contexto atual.
