Abstract

This work is an exploratory research theoretically based on attributional concepts, mainly on Bernard Weiner's constructs. Its main objective was the analysis of the poor academic performance of fourth-grade students from public elementary schools, in São Paulo State. Fifty-two students, whose ages varied from 10 to 15 years old and eight teachers participated in this research. These students were held back based on results of the 'SARESP' examination and were attending School During Vacation project. Ten thematic categories were constructed, some were common to the students and teachers and others were mentioned or omitted, exclusively by one group. The results of the students' responses clearly indicated that they attributed their own lack of discipline in the classrooms and the absence of study skills to be the reasons of their poor performance. Teachers responses attributed students' lack of discipline and their families the responsibility of such a poor performance.
