Abstract

This study characterizes the production system and assesses economic and energy consuming efficiency in exploring water resources of bi-cultivation pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) and piauçu (Leporinus macrocephalus) - both tropical freshwater fishes - in fishponds hollowed in the Medium Paranapanema region in the State of São Paulo, in harvest 2007/08. Methodology used to estimate production operational costs was the one from the Instituto de Economia Agrícola (Agricultural Economy Institute). Five profitability indicators and six economic viability indices were estimated. For energy consuming analysis energy “inputs” were taken into account regarding the labor, limestone, chemical and organic fertilizer, juvenile fish, food, fuel, lubricating oil , grease and machines operating, and energy “output” in the form of cultivated fish by area unity and five energy indicators assessed. Estimate of total operational production costs were US$ 12,184.4 per cycle/ha. The most representative items encompassed expenditures on food and labor. Pacu’s unity production costs were US$ 1.2/kg and Piauçu’s US$ 1.4/kg. The gross income were US$ 14,558.0 per cycle/ha (pacu) and US$ 2,519.3 per cycle/ha (piauçu); operational profit US$ 4,067.0/ha (pacu) and US$ 827.3/ha (piauçu); gross margins 38.8 % (pacu) and 48.9 % (piauçu); profitability rate 27.9 % (pacu) and 32.8% (piauçu), and break even point 6,125.4 kg/ha (pacu) and 805.9kg/ha (piauçu)...(Complete abstract, click electronic access below)
