Abstract

The poet Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) is one of the most important Spanish authors, from pre-civil war Spain, at the beginning of the 20th century. His work draws on an extensive tradition of scholarly scholarship; in particular with regard to his theatrical plays, which earned him great recognition and constitute an innovative project in his time. That said, El Público (1930), the only play by Lorca that explores the theme of homosexuality, we realize that critics tend to read it as a unique work. of modern theater, finding in it surrealist, expressionist traits and even those that refer to the theater of the absurd. However, more recent studies on the tragic in García Lorca's theatrical productions tend to classify the play in question as a text of this nature. Therefore, the main guideline of this research is to study the play El Público (1930) and read it as a modern tragedy, following the lead dictated by Antonio Monegal (2000). For this, the considerations of the cultural critic Raymond Williams, regarding the different nuances that tragedy assumes in modernity, and of the Hungarian Peter Szondi, about the tragic and its particularities, are fundamental. Nor can we fail to carry out an overview of surrealist aesthetics, in addition to considerations on metatheatricality, which helped to understand the modernizing tone given to the text. It is, in short, to unravel the tragic configuration of the play in tune with the theme of homosexuality, which structurally interferes in its textual texture.
