Abstract

Marvelous tales exist orally since immemorial times, however, when the written record of such stories is discussed, there are controversies regarding the writing’s pioneering nature of this genre of text. This work aims to highlight the pioneering spirit of the Italian renaissance author Giovan Francesco Straparola regarding the written record of the literary marvelous tale and analyzed important aspects of the tales he wrote in his The Facetious Nights – Le piacevoli notti, published for the first time between 1550-1553. In this research, we studied the marvelous genre based on some scholars, such as Sperber (2009), Propp (1984 and 2006), Volobuef (2011), Warner (1999) and Darnton (1986); regarding the Renaissance author, we focused on Rua, (1898 and 1899) and Pirovano (2000); in relation to the literary analysis, we focused on the work of Franco Junior (2003), Sperber (2009) and Adan & Heidmann (2011) and, finally, we used Chevalier’s work (2015) to analyze the rich symbolic load of various textual elements that help in the composition of the meaning. Straparola’s work presents a variety of genres, for example, the marvelous tales that were the object of our study. Thus, we studied three marvelous narratives present in his work “O pássaro Belverde”, “Biancabella” e “Constantino Afortunado”), and listed the characteristics of the marvelous tales, proving them as we analyzed the selected texts. It was important to highlight, during the development of this work, that the innovative construction of narratives carried out by Straparola was not revolutionary, however, it was innovative both for the genre register and for the literariness given to his work, for the richness of symbols and marvelous elements. We sought to prove marks of the genre, understanding its functioning within the text, and relating them to works that have come down to us over the centuries, across continents. In addition, we focused on the characterization given to women within the work and compared it to its production context.
