Authors: Faria, Niara Ulhoa;

Abstract

Objective: The aim of the present study was to verify the relative bioavailability of chromium chelate in healthy adults. Methodology: An intervention study with a duration of approximately 3h was developed, involving 21 healthy adult volunteers of both sexes, recruited at the Clinical Hospital of Ribeirão Preto / HC-USP. The volunteers received a supplement containing 600 μg chromium chelate in a single dose, blood samples were subsequently collected at five specific times and two urine samples were collected, one before taking the supplement and another regarding urine collected within 24 hours, they were also submitted to clinical and nutritional assessment composed by anthropometry, body composition and food intake assessment and biochemical assessment consisting of fasting glucose, lipidogram, plasma and urinary chromium. Results: The study group met the criteria for healthy people according to biochemical tests, food consumption assessment and anthropometric assessment. Comparing the plasma chromium dosing times, we observed that there is no significant difference between them, regardless of times and genders. Regarding urine, there is a significant difference, with 24-hour urine, on average, higher than basal urine. Conclusion: Chromium was absorbed and bioavailable from urinary chromium data.
