Abstract

The nitrogen fertilization technic when combined with 95% of light interception on the forage canopy management, whether in intermittent or continuous grazing system, results in an increase in the production and quality of tropical grasslands. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization rates on litter production and decomposition and to quantify soil carbon (C) fractions of a Brachiaria brizanta cv Marandu pasture area, managed in continuous stocking and variable load, in order to maintain the grass height in 25 cm. The treatments consisted of N applications in the form of urea: 0, 90, 180 and 270 kg N/ha. The statistical design was a DIC with five replicates. The litter production and decomposition was evaluated using the squared methodology every 14 days. The litter and nutrients decomposition was also evaluated using nylon bags at times, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 and 256 days. There was significant interaction (P0.05) between the N rates and the total organic carbon (TOC) in the 10-20 cm soil layer and the 0-10 cm layer had a quadratic effect. In the unstable fractions of soil organic matter (SOM), the effects of N doses varied between linear, cubic and non-significant, depending on depth. In the stable fractions of SOM, there were non-significant and linear interactions, depending on the fraction analyzed. Increasing the N dose accelerates litter decomposition and nutrient cycling, it also increases soil C stocks.
