Abstract

In teleostean fish, thyroid hormones have been implicated in early development, although available data are still contradictory. Hormonal treatments may offer a practical means of improving rearing techniques. The present study assessed the effects of triiodothyronine (T3) added to eggs of Leporinus elongatus by hydration during the fertilization process on the early development of the species. The experiment was carried out at Estação de Hidrobiologia e Piscicultura de Três Marias, CODEVASF, in Três Marias, MG, from February to March of 2000. Eggs from 3 females were dry fertilized with milt (one male for each female) and hydrated with T3 water solutions, during 35 minutes. Solutions constituted the treatments: Control/Tr1 (0.0 ppm T3); Tr2 (0.01 ppm T3); Tr3 (0.05 ppm T3) and Tr4 (0.1 ppm T3). After hydration, eggs were maintained in 20L incubators, with constant water flow and water conditions monitored. Fertilization rate (9 h after fertilization), embryogenesis time (at hatching), total length, yolk sac volume (12 and 24 h after hatching) and abnormality rate (zero, 12 and 24 h after hatching) were determined. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test. The T3 addition by egg hydration during the fertilization process showed to be a practical and reproducible method to test hormones effect on fish early development. T3 addition to Leporinus elongatus eggs decreased fertilization rate and prolonged embryogenesis time, in the tested dosis. It neither altered the larvae growth nor induced abnormalities. The species might present circulating levels of thyroid hormones that make exogenous hormone unnecessary to the improvement of its early development
