Abstract

The present work was carried in a riparian zone from October 2000 to September 2001 inside a representative plot of a riparian forest, of Semi-Decidual Seasonal Forest, located in an area of Environmental Protection (APA), in the middle southern region of São Paulo state, property of Edgardia Experimental Farm of the Agronomic Science College, UNESP, campus of Botucatu,, São Paulo state. The following parameters were quantified: total rainfall, interception, internal precipitation, stem drainage from top strata and sub-vegetation, superficial drain, water retention in the litter (organic matter), concentration of macro-nutrients in the stream water, production , rate of decomposition, and chemical composition of the organic matter. The study was done in a parcel of land of 50 x 50 meters, in which were installed 24 rain gauges inside the plot, and one pluviometer under open sky conditions, as well as systems of collection of stem drained of the upper and lower layers of trees and plants, a system of surface water collection, and collection systems of water from litter fall, and of groundwater water at different depths. The present work was aimed at quantifying the losses by interception, their respective shares and variables related to the hydrological cycles, and of aspects of the cycling of nutrients in this ecosystem. The temporary stocking of rain-water by the ecosystem was quite... (Complete abstract, click electronic address below).
