Abstract

Cosmarium Corda ex Ralfs is, with about 1,500 species, the desmid genus that presents the greatest taxonomic diversity among the freshwater algae. Present floristic survey included all smooth-walled forms, and considered all references up to the present in the São Paulo State literature as well as the analysis of all material deposited in the Herbário Científico do Estado Maria Eneyda P. Kauffmann Fidalgo (SP), including that collected from 2002 on during the development of the project Flora ficológica do estado de São Paulo (Program BIOTA/FAPESP, Virtual Institute of Biodiversity). Sixty-four taxa were identified distributed in 38 species, 21 varieties that are not the typical of their respective species, and five taxonomical formae that are not also typical, but of their respective varieties. Identification of the 64 taxa was made on the basis of characteristics exclusively of the vegetative part of their life cycle. Such characteristics were, mainly, the linear dimensions of the cell length and breadth and of the isthmus breadth, the shape of the semicells, the number and situation of the chloroplasts in the cell, and the number and location of the pyrenoids in the plastid. The best distributed species in the state was C. angulosum Brébisson var. angulosum f. angulosum, which was identified from material gathered from 12 different municipalities. It was followed by C. pyramidatum Brébisson var. pyramidatum that was identified from material gathered from eleven municipalities. Identification of C. impressulum Elfving var. crenulatum (Nägeli) Krieger & Gerloff is pioneer for Brazil, and those of C. bioculatum Brébisson var. bioculatum, C. connatum (Brébisson) Ralfs var. connatum, and C. impressulum Elfving var. crenulatum (Nägeli) Krieger & Gerloff are pioneer for the state of São Paulo. Despite of indication of vegetative reproduction by cell division be relatively... (Complete abstract, click electronic address below)
