Abstract

Restinga forests are vegetational units, which differ uloristicaiiy and structurally, conditioned mainly by varjations of the water table. Considering that water and light are some of the main factors that influence the regeneration process of piants, this paper aims at evaiuating the ecophysiologíc aspects of the species (Ocotea pu/cheila and Ternstroemia brasiliensis) that occur ftequently in these fomations on Ilha do Cardoso - SP in distínct condítions of sou moisture (dry, moist and flooded) and of light (understory forest and gap). Oermination aspects (also in Erythroxy/um amplifolium and Pera glabrata), ínitial growth and survival in natural and semi-controlled conditions were evaiuated. In order to evaluate the natural regeneration, the rain, seed banks, density, emergence, growth and survival of seedlings were estimated. The seasonai rhythms of the leaf fali, dispersai of seeds, emergence and mortality of seediings were related to the climate and to the production of litterfail in each environment. O. pu/cheila, T brasiliensis and E. amplfo1ium, were usuaily indifferent as to Iight in terms of germination except that the latter had less germínation in the dark. The first two, for which the temperature was evaiuated, a broad band of temperature was observed in which germination occurred. Fiooding was the factor that affected this process more negatively. P. glabrata presented the smallest germinability among the studied species, with a tendency to increase in dj-ier environments. The survivai of plants of O. pulche//a in the EG (Experimental Garden) was high and little influenced by Iight and moisture of the understory, and only the direct radiation affected the seediings negativeiy, and the flooded understory affected the juveniles. In the EG, the seedling growth of O. pu/cheila was favored by intermediate leveis of light while the radiation with the smaiiest ratio V: VE favored...
