Abstract

Foram estudados 590 quelônios pertencentes a cinco espécies: Chelonia mydas (n = 508), Caretta caretta (n = 31), Eretymochelys imbricata (n = 31), Lepidochelys olivacea (n = 12) (Cheloniidae) e Dermochelys coriacea (n = 8) (Dermochelidae).

The present study aimed to evaluate the helminth parasites of sea turtles from Brazilian Coast. A total of 590 chelonians from five species were studied: Chelonia mydas (n = 508), Caretta caretta (n = 31), Eretymochelys imbricata (n = 31), Lepidochelys olivacea (n = 12) (Cheloniidae) and Dermochelys coriacea (n = 8) (Dermochelidae). Only dead animals or that died in TAMAR-ICMBio Project Marine Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center were included in the study. The parasitological analysis was performed in the animal’s digestive tract, circulatory system and cavity. A total of 36,186 helminthes of the classes Trematoda and Nematoda were found, with great predominance of the trematodes. Thirteen families, 34 genera and 41 species were identified. Data on prevalence, richness, intensity of infection and abundance of parasites are presented for every helminthes species, for each studied host. The obtained results represent an important contribution to the knowledge of helminth fauna of sea turtles and on the geographic distribution of these helminthes in the Brazilian Coast
