The present article approaches engages in a bibliographical investigation on both the processes and cognitive structures related to the reading of Western music notation. El presente artículo aborda una investigación bibliográfica sobre los procesos y estructuras cognitivas relacionados con la lectura de notación musical occidental. En las conclusiones se sugiere que la lectura musical es un tipo especial de proceso cognitivo donde las representaciones mentales musicales tienen un papel muy importante. Los hallazgos habidos en las investigaciones que aquí se reportan pueden enriquecer nuevos enfoques teóricos y prácticos de la lectura de notación musical occidental.
