Abstract

Textbooks have been analysed from different points of view. In music education there is little research considering them as visible texts showing the discipline’s state of affairs. Methods used in studies on textbooks are quite diverse. This pilot study mainly aims at (1) testing the method employed, (2) highlighting the contents, procedures and educational aspects characterizing present music education, as they are shown in textbooks, (3) evaluating functionality of the method to show the trends of present music education, and subsidiarily (4) evaluating the discipline by means of these results. The approach is qualitative, using two independent category systems to identify educational topics, and instructional models in a small sample of books. Tasks in students’ books, teachers’ activities in instructional guides, and further materials were analysed. Results show the adequacy of the method used in this study, and the need to integrate the two category systems. Besides many features of the texts, a trend towards a strong traditional focus with little more evolved activities, and scarce educational topics were observed. Comparing the textbook for 6th and for 1st grade, the former contains more conceptual tasks, reflecting a more abstract concept of music education for older students. The method showed to be useful in analysing textbooks to display how music education is taught. The sample is too small to allow general conclusions on music education
