This study examines the presence or absence of the article in constructions in which a preposition is followed by the relative pronoun que: “el niño con el que/con que jugabas”. Our aim is to determine how these structures work in educated Spanish (norma culta) and to determine whether there are any linguistic or geographic factors that affect this variation. It is shown that the unmarked construction with the article is not always the most common. An outstanding finding implies that structures with the preposition en are used mostly without the article. Finally, there seem to be differences in the presence or absence of the article across the Atlantic Ocean. While in Latin American Spanish the construction without the article is widely used, in Spain the tendency is to keep the article.
