Abstract

Sedentary behaviour is spreading among society, especially since the rise of technology, and sedentary lifestyle habits are also being transmitted to children, who increase the time they spend in sedentary activities like video games or TV. It has been demonstrated that both sedentary behavior and physical inactivity have negative consequences for the health, and they may become a serious problem for public health, as it has been claimed in several studies. The main aim of this systematic review is to analyze the latest contributions regarding sedentary lifestyle in children and to determine its consequences for children’s health. This required to make a systematic review of studies about the subject, which was carried out through two databases: Sportdiscus and Medline. The results obtained allow to identify several child health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle, highlighting obesity as the main problem. At the same time, these studies also confirmed that the practice of physical activity is beneficial to children's health, and that it helps to counteract sedentary behaviour.
