Abstract

El escultor Juan Pérez Crespo es un artista que ha pasado desapercibido para la historia de la escultura española. Su vida se desarrolló en tres ciudades, Lorca, Granada y Sevilla. Nació y vivió su juventud en Lorca (Murcia), aprendió el arte de la escultura en el taller granadino de Alonso de Mena junto a Pedro Roldán, contrajo matrimonio con la hija del maestro y hermana del escultor Pedro de Mena, y finalmente se estableció en Sevilla. En esta última ciudad mantuvo la amistad con Pedro Roldán, realizó las esculturas de San Cosme y San Damián, y murió en 1659. Su viuda Sebastiana de Mena y Medrano se trasladó a Málaga con Pedro de Mena, y su hijo mayor Gabriel Pérez de Mena, después de aprender en el taller de Roldán, se trasladó a Murcia.

The sculptor Juan Pérez Crespo is an artist who has gone unnoticed in the history of Spanish sculpture. His life was developed in three cities (Lorca, Granada and Seville). He was born and lived his youth in Lorca (Murcia), learned the art of sculpture in the Alonso de Mena art workshop together with Pedro Roldán, married with the daughter of the master and sister of the sculptor Pedro de Mena, and finally settled in Seville. In the latter city he maintained friendship with Pedro Roldán, carved sculptures of San Cosme and San Damián, and died in 1659. His widow Sebastiana de Mena y Medrano moved to Malaga with Pedro de Mena, and their greater child Gabriel Pérez de Mena, after learning in the workshop of Roldán, moved to Murcia.
