Results of a study about the transition to motherhood of 107 women, 48 adolescent mothers and 59 adult mothers are presented in this paper. Data show that motherhood during the adolescence and during the adulthood are different processes. Adolescent mothers showed less availability of support sources, had different developmental beliefs and interacted with their babies in a different way than adult mothers. Also, adolescent mothers’ babies showed lower cognitive development level than adult mothers’ babies. It is deemed necessary to further study the circumstances contributing to a better adjustment of teenage mothers to their new maternal role, as well as to develop intervention programmes specific for these circumstances.
