La imagen del bárbaro que ofrece Apiano en su Historia Romana deriva en gran parte de toda la tradición grecorromana al respecto, de la que sin duda constituye un eslabón más. Sin embargo se ha servido del modelo creado para dar salida a sus objetivos literarios y ha canalizado a través de él ciertas emociones personales ante el fenómeno de la conquista romana.
