Ruggero Giuseppe Boscovich (1711-1787) carried out what probably is the rnost ambitious attempt of unification of 18th century physics. Although the fundamental elements of his theory were clearly non-atomistic in character, he has been considered one of the founders of modern atomism. This rather paradoxical situation is due to the incorporation of some of Boscovich ideas to the conceptualization of intermolecular forces by James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), a process that gave impulse to classical kinetic theory of gases and opened the door to early formulations of modem atomic and molecular physics. hz this paper, the process by which the ideas of Boscovich were incorporated to 19th century's atomism is analyzed.
