Abstract

This thesis is a detailed examination of the representation of Istanbul in the travelogues and literary oeuvre of prominent Arab and French writers. Istanbul, renowned for its historical significance and cultural richness, has been a perennial muse for writers across the globe. This study focuses on the nuanced portrayals of Istanbul by distinguished authors such as İbn Battuta, Pierre Loti, and Théophile Gautier, among others, exploring the depth of their engagement with the city and the profound impact it has had on their literary works. The thesis delves into the intricate historical and cultural contexts that have shaped these writers' perceptions of Istanbul, analyzing how they have navigated the themes of exoticism, orientalism, and cultural exchange in their depictions of the city. By examining these portrayals, the study seeks to illuminate the complex interplay between literature, history, and cultural identity in shaping the image of Istanbul in Arab and French literature. Through a meticulous analysis of primary sources and critical scholarship, this thesis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how Istanbul has been imagined and represented in the literary imagination of Arab and French writers. It also seeks to contribute to broader discussions within the fields of literature, cultural studies, and historical discourse.
