Electric bus public transport cybersecurity

Abstract

In this study, cybersecurity of public transport is taken into consideration and the main goal is to develop a cyber defense solution, which aims to ensure the continuity of critical service and after the attack is cleared, restoration of the service. This solution will be integrated into charging coordination systems of electric bus fleets. The electrical buses have been widely deployed in the recent years. The size of the electric bus market is expected to grow at an annual growth rate of 43.1%, increasing from 112 thousand units used in 2022 to 671 thousand units in 2027. In parallel to the increasing adoption of electrical vehicles worldwide more charging stations will be needed, threatening the operational boundaries of the electrical distribution infrastructure. In the thesis study, three characteristically different public transport routes, which are relatively shorter, close to the average and longer distance compared to most of the public transport routes will be selected from IETT's official website and the related time schedules will be considered for each. The project considers the impact of rush hours, traffic congestion and controls how many busses are to be sent to ensure the smooth flow of the whole fleet, considering the minimum time windows needed for charging the buses and to satisfy the public transport mobility need of the community. Considering the energy, power and times needed for charging each bus in the public transport fleet throughout the day, the developed solution will decide and determine which bus will leave which station at which time and how many busses are needed for the same station at the specific time. The project also looks at the whole application taking into account the cyber security vulnerabilities and possible threats that may arise from integrating electrical vehicles, their charging systems and several charger coordination solutions. The aim is to maintain cyber resiliency in the system. The project also aims at reducing costs in dynamic pricing tariffs, where the hourly pricing rate of electricity changes, reducing carbon emission by performing low-carbon charging based on the carbon emission of the grid electricity generation mix. All the data regarding the energy sources will be observed hourly and gathered from the official resources to investigate realistic scenarios.
