Abstract

The science of Tajweed fundamentally deals with the correct pronunciation of the letters and words of the Qur'an. It has been transmitted from the Prophet Muhammad to the present day through various stages and has constantly evolved. The Ottoman period, which lasted for more than six centuries in history, holds a distinguished place in the tradition of Islamic thought. During this period, numerous poetic and prose works were written concerning the science of Tajweed. Many Ottoman scholars of Tajweed produced original works in the field, influencing their contemporary era and serving as sources for subsequent works. The aim of our thesis is to examine the works of two Ottoman scholars who lived in different periods and transcended their own time by contributing to later studies on the science of Tajweed, through the analysis of their works in terms of methodology and content. In this context, the main focus of our thesis is the comparative analysis of the works of Muhammad b. Abi Bakr al-Mar'ashi (d. 1145/ 1732), a scholar from the period of stagnation in the Ottoman Empire, who wrote the work entitled Cühdü’l-mukill in Arabic, and Mehmet Zihni Efendi (d. 1332/ 1913), a scholar from the late Ottoman period, who wrote the work entitled el-Kavlü’s-sedîd fî ‘ilmi’t-tecvîd (Tajweed-i cedîd) in Ottoman Turkish. Through the analysis, similarities and differences between the two works will be explored, as well as the approaches of the authors to the fundamental issues of Tajweed, and the sources they drew upon in composing their works.
