Post - Yugoslav belgesellerde nostalji : cinema komunisto örneği

Abstract

The Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) was dissolved as a result of internal conflicts and wars that started in 1991. With the declaration of independence of the Republic of Kosovo in 2008, Yugoslavia was divided into 7 separate countries and the dissolution process was completed. However, common values continued to exist in the memories of the peoples of the region, who developed a common culture to a certain extent between 1945-1991. After a certain period of time following the conflicts and wars, nostalgia elements with different dynamics began to emerge in post-Yugoslav countries. These nostalgic elements have developed in different forms; from various art forms to cultural activities, from shopping habits to traveling. During this period, various forms of art were produced which sometimes used the elements of nostalgia with trauma, and sometimes made a nostalgic effect with historical references. In this thesis, we will try to explain how nostalgia is constructed through discourse in Mila Turajlic's documentary Cinema Komunisto; which is based on 5 years of extensive research, has been highly appreciated, widely criticized, screened in universities, incorporated in the curriculum of most universities, and articles were written about it. Turajlic has a nostalgic discourse due to the archival materials used in her film and the subject of the documentary itself. However, various techniques have been used to minimize film’s nostalgia effects. The director, who gives excessive space to nostalgic elements from time to time, tries to get away from nostalgia with various methods, especially grotesque aesthetics. One of the most important documentary directors who grew up in post-Yugoslav countries, Mila Turajlic's Cinema Komunisto (2011) is a fitting movie to be examined in terms of nostalgia, both in terms of its subject and the visual materials used.
