Abstract

ABSTRACTAN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE INVESTIGATIONOF THE CUTTING PARAMETERS?S EFFECTS ON THECUTTING FORCE AND THE TEMPERATURE IN DRILLINGAluminum is used in many industries to make different products and issignificant to the world economy. Structural components made from aluminum andaluminum alloys are vital to the aerospace industry and very important in other areasof transportation and building in which durability, strength and light weight arewanted. Although modern metal cutting methods improved in manufacturingindustry, conventional drilling still remains one of the most common machiningprocess because of economical reasons and simplicity.Drilling process is widely used in aerospace, aircraft and automotive industries.in this process, the influence on tool life of cutting temperature has been subject ofthe major part of the work carried out in dry drilling. Additionally, drill performanceand hole quality are also mainly dependent upon drilling forces. This is due to thefact that the effects of machining parameters, different coatings and drill geomerty indry drilling conditions have been investigated in order to understand their effect onthe cutting temperature and cutting forces. In this thesis, the experimental andnumerical approach used and the results presented in this thesis demonstrate thatthere was a good agreement between the predicted and measured results of cuttingtemperature and cutting forces which were found in dry drilling. The dry drilling tests were performed on Al 2024 for 10 mm different coateddrill diameters; several spindle speeds, and feed rates. Thermocouple method used inthese experiments to measurement of cutting temperature. Dynamometer was alsoused in order to measurement of cutting forces in dry drilling of aluminum alloys. The cutting temperatures and forces were predicted using a numericalcalculation with Third Wave AdvantEdge⢠3D version Lagrangian based on explicitfinite element analysis software.June, 2006 Yusuf KAYNAK

Haziran, 2006 Yusuf KAYNAK
