Abstract

ABSTRACT In that study, you will find the history of the railway known as `Mersina-Tarsus- Adana Railway` that begins from the sea-port of Mersina, passing through the city of Tarsus, reaches at an end at Adana. That study, for being prepared as a master thesis, is aimed at to be kept limited in terms of its subject and contents. Therefore, we have tried to concentrate on the construction of the railway and the very period of the administration of it Incidentally, the thesis begins with the concession of the construction and the very period the exploitation of that concession. The construction of the railway constitutes the core of the study. The capital assessment and administrative burden of the railway whose concession of construction and exploitation was given to Mehmed Nahid Bey and Kostaki Teodoridi Effendi at the first of January 1883, was to a great extent undertaken by English capital. You will also find the problems occured between Ottoman government and the concession owner firm during the construction period and the ways through which these problems were solved. As the great majority of the resources of that thesis consists of Ottoman archive documents, you will see the evaluations and facts from the point of view of Ottoman government That study will also illuminate a little the relationships between the private capital of the period and the state, while telling the story of Mersina-Tarsus- Adana railway. Since there is no one single specific study on the subject we resorted to Ottoman archive documents regarded as the main resources on the subject. However, we also used the periodicals of the time and research studies that mention this subject vn

ÖZET Bu çalışma, Mersin'deki limandan başlayıp Tarsus şehri içinden Adana'ya uzanan ve döneminde `Mersin-Tarsus-Adana Demiryolu` adıyla bilinen demiryolun tarihini anlatır. Bu çalışma bir yüksek lisans tezi olarak hazırlandığından, konusunun ve kapsamın sınırlı tutulması amaçlanmıştır. Bu yüzden demiryolun inşasıyla, işletmesinin ilk yılları üzerine yoğunlaşmayı uygun gördük. Tez asıl olarak, demiryolun inşâ ve işletme imtiyazının verilmesiyle başlamaktadır. Demiryolun inşâsı, çalışmanın bel kemiğini oluşturmaktadır. 1 Ocak 1883'te Mehmed Nâhid Bey ve Kostaki Teodoridi Efendi'ye inşâ ve işletme imtiyazı verilen demiryolun sermâyesini ve işletmesini, ağırlıklı olarak İngilizler üstlenmiştir. Çalışmada daha çok, demiryolun inşâsı sırasında imtiyaz sahibi şirket ile Osmanlı hükümeti arasında meydana gelen sorunları ve bu sorunların nasıl aşıldığını bulacaksınız. Çalışmanın kaynaklarının büyük çoğunluğunu, Osmanh arşiv belgelerinin oluşturmasından dolayı, yapılan değerlendirmelerde ve anlatılan olgularda daha çok Osmanlı devletinin konuya bakış açısını göreceksiniz. Bu çalışma asıl olarak Mersin- Tarsus-Adana demiryolu tarihini anlatmakla birlikte, dönemin özel sermâye ile devlet arasındaki ilişkilerinin anlaşılıp değerlendirilmesine bir nebze ışık tutabilecek durumdadır. Konuyla ilgili bağımsız hiçbir çalışmanın bulunmaması nedeniyle çalışmanın en temel kaynaklarını, birincil kaynaklar kapsamında değerlendirilen, Osmanlı devletinin arşiv kayıtları oluşturmaktadır. Bununla birlikte çalışmada dönemin süreli yayınlarından ve araştırma eserlerinden de yararlanılmıştır. VI
