An Approach to process improvement in industry

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this dissertation is to use a collection of statistical techniques for extracting information from experimental data which in turn will be used to understand the process and to determine optimum operating conditions for the purpose of process improvement. The experimental data from four different industrial processes were analyzed using experimental design and analysis techniques. These processes are thermoplastic fiber placement process, electroless copper plating process, washing process and textile dyeing process. In the first chapter, experimental design concept is introduced and literature survey is presented. In the second chapter, a summary of experimental design methods is given and the analysis methods used in this dissertation are presented. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth chapters include the applications of experimental design and analysis methods to four industrial processes. In the third chapter, the design employed is a two-factor factorial design. The analysis was carried out using those numerical and graphical methods which are multivariate analysis of variance, univariate analysis of variance, multiple comparisons, interaction plots, response surface plots, and boxplot diagrams. In the fourth chapter, the design used is an unreplicated two-level four- factor factorial design. The experimental data were analyzed using the methods for identification of location and dispersion effects. In the fifth chapter, the selected design is an unreplicated two-level six-factor fractional factorial design of resolution VI. For the data analysis, analysis of variance, main and interaction effects plots and scatter plot were used. In the sixth chapter, the selected design for the experiment is an unreplicated two- level six-factor fractional factorial design of resolution IV. For the data analysis, analysis of variance, scatter plots, and table of significant factors and interactions were used. The seventh chapter presents the results obtained from this dissertation and suggestions for further studies. IV
