Hilâfet tarihi, İslâm kurumları tarihinde merkezî bir konum teşkil etmektedir. Bu öneminden dolayı hilâfet kurumu, pek çok sahada üzerinde birçok çalışmanın yapıldığı bir konu olmuştur. Hilâfet literatürünün başında ise şüphesiz Ebu'l-Hasan el-Mâverdî gelmektedir. Yaşadığı dönemin şartlarının, halifenin yanında ve hizmetinde olan Mâverdî'nin hilafet görüşlerini etkilediği görülmektedir. Mâverdî, Büveyhî emirleri vesayeti altında olan Abbâsî hilâfetinin savunmasını yapmıştır. Benzer şekilde hilâfet kurumunun savunulduğu diğer bir dönem ise XIX. yy Osmanlı hilâfeti dönemidir. Bu dönemde ise halifenin yanında ve hizmetinde olan ve İslâmî kaynaklardan faydalanarak pek çok konuda olduğu gibi hilâfet konusunda da yol gösterici olan kişi Ahmed Cevdet Paşa'dır. O da dönemin şartlarına binâen hilâfet savunması yapmıştır. Bu tezde bu iki şahsiyetin halifenin yanındaki konumları ve dönemlerinin şartları dikkate alınarak hilâfet görüşleri karşılaştırılmıştır. Böylelikle ulema-siyaset ilişkisi çerçevesinde hilâfet kurumu algısındaki değişen ve değişmeyen unsurlar ortaya konmaya çalışılmaktadır.

History of khilafet, has a central place in Islamic institutions. Because of this importance, the Khilafet institution has been the subject of many studies on many fields. At the beginning of the Khilafet literary, doubtless Abu'l-Hasan al-Maverdi comes. It seems that the conditions of the time he lived affected Maverdî's views of Khilafet. Mâverdî defended the Abbasid Khilafet under the tutelage of the Büveyhid orders. Similarly, another period in which the Khilafet institution was defended was the period of the 19th century Ottoman Khilafet. In this period, Ahmed Cevdet Pasha who was at Khalifa's side and at his service, the leader of the Khilafet, as well as being in many ways by benefiting from the Islamic sources and beside the Khalifa. He also made a defense of caliphate based on the conditions of the period. In this thesis, the views of the Khilafet were compared, taking into consideration the positions of these two persons and the conditions of their periods. Thus, the changing and unchanging elements of the Khilafet were tried to be revealed.
