Abstract

In this thesis work, how hegemonic masculinity is shaped in Turkey's society and how it is reflected in Serdar Akar movies are examined. Firstly, hegemonic masculinity is considered in historical context of gender, and then how this concept that is discussed reproduce masculinity in Turkey. In the study, representative of masculinity in cinema, masculinity's perspective to the others and crises of masculinities which cannot be hegemonic are questioned in filmic narration. Therefore, Serdar Akar who interested in masculinity from 1990s to today in his movies filmography was deemed appropriate. In film analysis, psychoanalytic feminist critique and sociological critique have been carried out together. The attention was drawn to the hegemonic masculinity which dominates movies and its relationship with power, militarism, gender and concepts like violence.
