Birgi Ulu Camii mimari ve tezyinat analizi

Abstract

At this period of political turmoil, diversity and experimentation in art and particularly in architecture has emerged. Birgi Great Mosque was built by Aydınoğlu Mehmed Bey in 1312 during the reign of beyliks at Birgi, the first capital of the Aydınoğulları. The building, separated from the Seljuk architecture for being far from magnificence in the external facade, has been an accomplished successor of the architecture and general features of ornamentation of Seljuk art at the Beyliks period. Mosaic tile decorations in the interior of the mosque are similar to their counterparts of the Seljuks period. The woodwork of the structure is particularly noteworthy in terms of the applied techniques and patterns. Diversity of rumi and geometric ornamentations of the wooden decorations is the most noticeable feature of the mosque. The harmony of the ornamentation of the compositions is created in a very successful manner. In this study, the techniques used to form the ornamentation of the Grand Mosque in Birgi are described, motifs of the ornamentation were examined in detail, and analysis of the compositions were performed. Analysis of compositions has been created using computer software and photographs have been used to visually support the text. With this work, we have attempted to make a contribution to understand the ornamentation of the so far neglected Beyliks period, which is a bridge between the Seljuk and Ottoman art.
