Investigation of the electrochromic properties of monophthalocyanine complexes bearing electrochromic substituents

Abstract

Manganese (MnPc), cobalt (CoPc), iron (FePc), and copper (CuPc) phthalocyanines, peripherally and non-peripherally tetra-substituted and peripherally octa-substituted with 3,4-(dimethoxyphenylthio) moieties, and electropolymerizable complexes peripherally tetra-substituted with quinolone groups were characterized by electrochemical, in-situ spectroelectrochemical and in-situ electrocolorimetric analysis methods. While CoPc gives a metal-based reduction process in addition to the ring-based reduction process, all other complexes give common ring reduction reaction of MPcs having redox inactive metal center. Optical changings especially in the visible part of the light spectrum are desired properties for a material for the usage in the display technologies. Electrochromic measurements indicate that film formation techniques, electrolyte system and type of the metal centers alter the basic electrochromic parameters of the complexes. Electrochromic studies show that Langmuir Blodgett films of MnPc and FePc are ideal neutral and anodic coloring electrochromic materials known for their short color changes times, long-term stability, and long-term write erase efficiency. A Langmuir Blodgett film of CoPc is an ideal neutral, cathodic, and anodic coloring polyelectrochromic material.Complexes bearing quinoline groups were electropolymerized on the working electrode during oxidation reactions and their electrochromic features were investigated in different electrolyte systems. These complexes illustrate excellent electrochromic properties with high optical contrast, optic and columbic stabilities, and short responses times in acetonitrile (AN)/tetrabuthylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) electrolyte system.
