Abstract

Due to rapid expansion in the usage, plastic wastes have become a serious problem which must be solved. Plastics wastes pose an important threat for environment. Therefore recycling of plastics wastes has become important for both economy and environment.EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a widely used synthetic rubber. EPDM wastes are not suitable for recycling due to thermoset structure. Waste EPDM is generally used as a fuel.The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of size of ground waste EPDM powders on the mechanical properties of polypropylene EPDM mixtures. With this aim four different powder size was considered in the present work. Tensile, Izod impact, hardness, melt flow index, heat deflection temperature, Vicat softening point and three point bending tests were performed on the specimens prepared out of mixtures.The changes in the size of EPDM powders affected the above mentioned material properties in different directions. It was found that the size of EPDM powder has a considerable effect on the properties. Different powder sizes form different interfacial area between the phases of polypropylene EPDM mixture. Here the key factors are the amount of interfacial area and the degree of interaction between the phases.

Kullanımdaki hızlı genişleme nedeniyle plastik atıkları çözülmesi gereken ciddi bir problem haline gelmiştir. Plastik atıkları çevre için önemli bir tehdit oluşturmaktadır. Dolayısıyla plastik atıklarının değerlendirilmesi gerek ekonomik açıdan ve gerekse çevre açısından çok önemli hale gelmiştir.EPDM (Etilen propilen dien monomeri) yaygın olarak kullanılan bir sentetik kauçuktur. EPDM atıkları termoset yapısından dolayı geri dönüşüme uygun değildir. Atık EPDM genellikle yakıt olarak kullanılmaktadır.Bu çalışmanın amacı; öğütülmüş atık EPDM toz boyutunun polipropilen EPDM karışımlarının mekanik özellikleri üzerindeki etkisinin incelenmesidir. Bu amaçla mevcut çalışmada dört farklı toz boyutu dikkate alındı. Karışımlardan hazırlanan numuneler üzerinde çekme, Izod darbe, sertlik, akış, ısı altında deformasyon, Vicat yumuşama noktası ve üç noktadan eğme testleri yapıldı.EPDM toz boyutunun değişmesi yukarıda sözü edilen malzeme özelliklerini farklı yönlerde etkiledi. EPDM toz boyutunun özellikler üzerinde önemli bir etkisi olduğu bulundu. Farklı toz boyutları polipropilen EPDM karışımının fazları arasında farklı arayüzeysel alan oluşturmaktadır. Buradaki anahtar faktörler arayüzeysel alanın miktarı ve fazlar arasındaki etkileşimin derecesidir.
