Celtis australis L. (Ulmaceae)`in ağır metal kirliliği için, biyomonitör olarak kullanılması

Abstract

In this study between years 2004-2007, the leaf, branch and bark samples of Celtis australis and the soil it grows in has been collected from 40 localities to investigate the usability of this plant as heavy metal pollution monitors, to determine the importance of the type of pollution sources and the distance of the plant to the pollution sources, to asses the ratio of airborne and soil borne contamination of heavy metal, to determine the amount and distribution of pollution generated by these metals in İstanbul. After going through preliminary procedure, metal contents of samples have been mesured with the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The average values of lead, cadmium, copper and zinc pollution were determined in the unwashed leaves taken from the roadside. These values were 14,90 ± 2,96 ppm, 0,65 ± 0,13 ppm, 19,94 ± 1,17 ppm and 42,53 ± 3,08 ppm respectively. The lowest lead and zinc pollution values were observed as 1.19±0.12 ppm and 14,34± 0,71 ppm in branch samples. For cadmium and copper the least values of washed samples are 0,30 ± 0,06 ppm and 5,99 ± 0,21 ppm. After comparison with other studies, it was seen that the concentration of heavy metals did not exceed the upper limit, except for some copper values. The statistical analysis showed that lead and cadmium contamination was via air, whilst copper and zinc contamination was via root. The accumulations of these four metals in increasing order were control regions, suburban, urban and roadsides. Direct correlation between accumulation, density of traffic and closeness to the road was observed. Our results showed that C.australis is a useful biomonitor especially for copper. Also the barks of this plant can be used for long-term measurements of heavy metal depositions. Finally, suggestions were presented for the solution of the problems discussed.
