Aydınlanma Çağı filozoflarının çocuğu olan bu figürün temelini Ortaçağ Avrupa'sının geçirdiği evrimlerde aramak gerekir. Toplumun yukarıdan biçimlenme çabasıyla birlikte, bilginin bir iktidar aracı olarak kullanılmasının getirdiği bir işlevsellikle aydın, bir `yasa koyucu` olarak tarih sahnesine çıkar. Devletin merkezîleşmesi ve iktidar mekanizmalarının oturması aydını muktedir konumundan dışlayınca, eleştirel entelektüelin doğduğunu görürüz. 20. yüzyıl boyunca bilginin toplumsal mübadelesi namına söz alan entelektüel, modernite sürecini eleştirmeye başlarken, yaşanan dünyanın dönüşümü adına da söz almaya ve eyleme koyulur. Bilginin proleterleri olmayı reddeden 1968 öğrenci hareketleriyle beraber kitleselleşen entelektüel eleştiri faaliyeti, özellikle 1980'lerle beraber gelen sosyo-politik gelişmeler karşısında toplumsal meşruiyetini de yitirmeye başlar. Kişinin ya da toplumsal grupların bir özne olarak meşruiyetlerinin ve bilginin özel ya da kamusal niteliğinin tartışmaya açıldığı bu döneme genel olarak postmodern dönem deniyor. Bu çağa özgü olan ve günümüze kadar gelen `bilgi toplumu` söyleminin altında ise, aslında bilginin özelleştirilmesi ve maddî ya da simgesel kâr arayışına tahvil edilmesi yatmaktadır. `Modern sonrası`na yapılan vurgu ise, Aydınlanma değerleriyle birlikte, eleştirel entelektüelin özne konumuna yönelik bir dışlamayı da içerir. Bu bunalım anında entelektüelin yapması gereken ise, kendi tarihsel gelişiminin tahliline ve muhasebesine giriştikten, gerekli dersleri içselleştirdikten sonra, hakim söylemleri deşifre ederken, bilginin toplumsal mübadelesini de mümkün kılmaya çalışmaktır.

If we want to see the origin of the children of Enlightenment, we must look at the evolutions of the European Middle Age. Philosoph of Enlightenment comes to the stage of history as a `legislator` -when knowledge becomes a vehicle for social power, the public gets shaped by an upper view. But when the state becomes a center and gets a unique form, the intellectual loses his power in the state mechanisms and there becomes the critical intellectual. He speaks in the name of the social exchange of knowledge in 20th century and as he makes a big critics of modernity, he tries to change the world with according to his praxis too. Intellectual critics becomes a public work with the student protests of 1968, who refuse to be proletarians of knowledge, but with the social and political changes especially in the 1980's, the intellectual figure begins to lose his social legalitiy. In this postmodern age, the role of intellectual as a public subject and the public or personally characteristics of knowledge begins to be question in the minds. But the myth of `information society` hides the fact that knowledge becomes a tool for money by the privatization of it. In this age, critical intellectual loses his role as a public subject with the virtues of Enlightenment and modernity. In this age of crisis, the intellectual must look behind his history and think on his wrong acts, while trying to decipher the dominant statements and working for the free exchange of information in the society.
