Abstract

XII ABSTRACT Prof. Dr. Akdes Nimet Kurat is one of the important figures who can not be replaced by another in Turkish historiography. His infinite enthusiasm to study on the way to national lofty aim what he believed, the work ethic he possessed and his glorious contributions to historiography arc the main faktors make him be considered among the rarely found scholars. The factors are very important which impressed him to choose science of history tostudy. His family was the leading factor. The history of İdil Ural region and The Kazan City itself were the main elements to built the cultural identity of his family. Two important figures had great impact on Kurat' s thougt structure. One of them was his father called Tahir who was impressed by Usul-i Cedid and the other one was Hadi Atlasi. Both figures are wellknown with their contributions to history and Turkism. Kurat, reaisinghe would not be able to achieve his goals in Russia, preferred Turkey to continue his education life (1924). He got his undergraduate degree from the Department of History at Istanbul University (1928). Then, he was awarded with ascholarship by The Ministry of Education (Maarif Vekaleti) to follow a doctorate program in Germany. As comleting his thesis about the history of Byzantium, he fot his PhD.Degree there in Germany.After coming back to Turkey, he gave several courses about `History of MiddleAges` as an Asistant Professor at Istanbul University. He also lectured at UppsalaUniversity, Sweden.In September 1939, he began to work at Gazi Institute of Education. Because of his succassful studies there, he was hired as an Associated Professor of Middle Ages History at Ankara University (AUDTCF). He worked as a dean of the same school between 1953 and 1955. This laudable academician died in a traffic accident in 28 August 1971. Prof.Dr. Akdes Nimet Kurat had a dynamic and living history perspective. He gave much importance to the unity of Turkishness, and evaluated some issues from tha point of view. His interpretations related with Armenian deportation, Turkism and Tatarism, his views about the politicat actions taken by The Otoman State and Russia showed a unigue pathway to his students to take place in the world of science.

XI ÖZET Prof. Dr. Akdes Nimet Kurat, Türk tarihçiliğinde yeri doldurulamayacak şahıslardan birisidir. Yaptığı çalışmalarla inandığı millî mefkure yolundaki yorulmak bilmez çalışkanlığı, ilmî ciddiyeti ile tarihçiliğe büyük katkılarda bulunan ender ilîm adamlarındandır. İlim alam olarak tarihi seçmesindeki etkenler çok önemlidir. Bu etkenlerin başında ailesi vardır. Ailesinin kültürel kimliğinin oluşmasında İdil-Ural bölgesinin tarihi ve Kazan şehrinin etkili olduğu gözden kaçmayacak unsurlardandır. Kurat'ın fikrî yapısında iki önemli şahsın etkisi vardı. Usûl-i Cedid'in etkisi altında kalan babası Tabir hazretleri ele hocası Hadi Atlasî'dir. Her ikisi de tarihe ve türkçülüğe verdikleri değerle taranmışlardır. Rusya'da istediği hedeflere ulaşamayacağını fark eden Kurat diğer aydınlar gibi Türkiye'yi tercih ederek (1924) eğitimine devam etti. İstanbul üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi'nin tarih şubesini tamamlayarak 1928 yılında mezun oldu. Maarif Vekâleti bursu ile `doktora` yapmak üzere Almanya'ya gitti. Bizans tarihi sahasında hazırladığı tezi ile Doktor unvanı aldı. Daha sonra `Ortaçağlar Tarihi` Doçent adayı olarak görev aldı. İsveç'te Uppsala Üniversitesinde dersler verdi. Eylül 1939'da Gazi Terbiye Enstitüsüne geçiş yaptı. Buradaki başarılı çalışmalarının AÜDTCF `Ortaçağlar Tarihi Doçentliği`ne getirildi. Aynı Fakülte'de 1953-1955 tarihleri arasında dekanlık görevini üstlendi. Değerli ilim adamımız 28 Ağustos 1971 'de geçirdiği trafik kazası sonucu vefat etti. Prof. Dr. Akdes Nimet Kurat dinamik ve yaşayan bir tarih anlayışına sahipti, çalışmalarında Türklüğün bölünmezliğini temel olarak aldığı gibi meseleleri de bu açıdan değerlendirdi. Ermenileri tehcir meselesi, Türkçülük ve Tatarcılık ile ilgili yorumları, Osmanlı Devleti ve Rusya'nın izlemiş olduğu siyasetlerle ilgili görüşlerini ilim dünyasına aktaran bu değerli tarihçimiz pek çok öğrencisine de yol göstererek ilim dünyasına kazandırmıştır.
