Anadolu Yarımadası, tarih boyunca farklı doğal ortam özelliklerinin sağladığı imkânlar nispetinde insan topluluklarının meydana getirdiği sayısız medeniyete ev sahipliği yapmıştır. İnsanlık bu süreçte; avcı-toplayıcı yaşantı, yerleşik düzene geçiş ve günümüz modern şehir yerleşmeleri şeklinde üç ayrı aşamadan geçmiştir. Önceleri mevcut şartlar gereğince yaşayan insan, zamanla yeni icat ve buluşlarla hayatını kolaylaştırmıştır. Türlü tabiat değerlerini işleyerek bunlardan faydalanma çabaları belli bir coğrafî potansiyelin de ortaya çıkmasına yol açmıştır. Esasında bu çaba yeni nesillerin devamını garanti altına alabilme mücadelesinden ibarettir. Anadolu Medeniyetleri ve Coğrafya konulu zerinde çalışırken, Anadolu Yarımadası'nın mevcut doğal-beşerî ortam özelliklerini nispeten genel bir değerlendirme yaparak ortaya koymak ve böylelikle tarihî süreçte coğrafî potansiyelin medeniyetlerin gelişimine etkilerini müzakere etmek amacımızı teşkil etmiştir. Üç ana bölümden müteşekkil olan çalışmamızın ilk bölümünde coğrafî potansiyel-medeniyet ilişkisi ele alınmıştır. İkinci bölümde, Anadolu Yarımadası'nın doğal ve beşerî ortam özeliklerinin ana hatları ile ortaya konulmasına gayret edilmiştir. Son bölümde ise, ilk iki bölümde tayin ve tespit edilen esaslar çerçevesinde tarihî süreçte Anadolu medeniyetlerinin kuruluş ve gelişimlerinde coğrafî potansiyelin etkileri müzakere edilmiştir.
