The Determinants of foreign banking: Turkish experience

Abstract

ABSTRACT The main theme of this thesis is to analyze the entry of foreign banks, and the factors associated with their profitability. The reasons for the entry and presence of foreign banking during the Ottoman empire as well as the Republican era have been elaborated under four headings namely; regulatory, economic, and political factors alongwith the profit opportunities. Their comparative financial performance has also been assessed with data ranging from 1981 to 1994. After literature survey, regulation, foreign trade, foreign debt, market growth, economic growth, and foreign direct investment were subjected to stepwise regression as independent variables. Profitability variables were used as dependent variables. The result of our analysis show that except foreign debt, all other independent variables render significant effect upon the profitability of foreign banking group in Turkey. CSS-STATISTICA was used to run the regression.
