Abstract

Appiano deforma le coordinate cronologico-evenemenziali di die vicende all'interno della II guerra Punica (gli scontri di C. Centenio all'indomani della disfatta al Trasimeno e di M. Centenio del 212, avvenuto in tutt'altro contesto geografico), che fonde in un tutt'uno. La fusione può ritenersi intenzionale, attuata allo scopo di mettere in cattiva luce il senato di Roma, che avrebbe concepito, dopo la sconfitta di Flaminio al lago Trasimeno, il disegno di inviare al lago Plestino Centenio, un cittadino privato, allo scopo di sbarrare ai Cartaginesi la strada verso Roma, con ciò palesando una netta ignoranza geografica.
