Abstract

Attraverso l'analisi delle fonti archeologiche, letterarie, epigrafiche e sfragistiche il contributo riprende le problematiche riguardanti la nascita dei quattro giudicati autonomi in cui la Sardegna era divisa nel pieno medioevo. Si individua una linea evolutiva delle istituzioni locali bizantine, che tra l'VIII e gli inizi dell'XI secolo, per un progressivo distacco da potere centrale, giunsero ad acquisire una piena autonomia, dapprima con un arcontato unico, successivamente con un pluralità di arconti e poi di giudici che governavano l'Isola. Importanti in questa ricostruzione sono la rilettura di alcune fonti, tra cui quelle agiografiche, e il contributo dato dai sigilli rinvenuti in diverse località della Sardegna.
