Abstract

Una pequeña base inscrita con dedicación a Vesta Aug(usta) ofrece la oportunidad de examinar un particular contexto religioso, el Templo de Dite y Saturno en Thignica (Ain Tounga), en el actual territorio de Túnez. En esta área sagrada, el culto a Vesta parece ser expresión -junto a los cultos de Dite, de un Saturno de probable ascendencia itálica y de Jano- de una comunidad emigrada desde la península itálica (quizás atraída por las posibilidades derivadas del desarrollo agrícola de la zona) y que pasó a formar parte de la civitas Thignicensis, compuesta sobre todo por locales. El culto a Vesta, raramente atestado en la provincia, se enriquece con un testimonio norteafricano poco conocido, que nos permite identificar una tendencia "arcaizante" que hundiría sus raíces en los cultos individuados en la zona occidental del Foro romano. Para abordar este tema se ha aplicado una metodología que relaciona los datos derivados de las fuentes históricas, arqueológicas y epigráficas, con el apoyo de la bibliografía científica.

Una piccola base inscritta con dedica a Vesta Aug(usta) offre lo spunto per esaminare un particolare contesto religioso, quello del Tempio di Dite e Saturno a Thignica (Ain Tounga), nell’attuale Tunisia. Nell’area sacra in questione, il culto di Vesta appare espressione -con quelli di Dite, di un Saturno di probabile ascendenza italica e di Giano- di una comunità emigrata dalla Penisola italica (forse attirata dalle possibilità offerte dallo sviluppo agricolo) che entrò a far parte della civitas Thignicensis, composta anzitutto da locali. Il culto di Vesta, raramente attestato in ambito provinciale, si arricchisce di una testimonianza nord-africana poco nota, che consente di individuare un filone “arcaizzante” che affonderebbe le sue radici in culti attestati nella zona occidentale del Foro romano. Si è applicato nell’affrontare questo tema il metodo dell’incrocio dei dati tratti dalle fonti storiche, archeologiche ed epigrafiche, supportate dalla bibliografia scientifica.
