Archeometria epigrafica: la sperimentazione di Abellinum

Abstract

Il contributo illustra i primi risultati di una sperimentazione archeometrica di tipo isotopico condotta sui supporti lapidei di un campione selezionati di epigrafi provenienti dalla basilica paleocristiana di Abellinum-Capo la Torre. I litotipi, individuati già a livello macroscopico e ulteriormente verificati, si sono rivelati tutti marmi, il che permette di escludere una provenienza locale. Gli areali di diffusione individuati grazie alle analisi isotopiche restringono i bacini di provenienza prevalentemente alle aree della Grecia orientale e della Bitinia. Per i marmi bianchi purissimi rimangono da effettuare analisi petrografiche e sezioni sottili, per distinguere differenze non diversamente evidenti tra marmi di provenienza greca e quelli lunensi. L'esperienza dimostra la validità dei metodi multidisciplinari, sia sotto il profilo metodologico, sia per gli apporti di nuove conoscenze che inducono a rileggere anche alcune realtà storico-insediative nel periodo della Guerra Greco- Gotica.
