L’Abbazia archivio | museo | laboratorio un progetto architettonico per lo CSAC The Abbey archive | museum | workshop an architectural project for the CSAC

Abstract

One of the last Cistercian abbeys founded in Italy at the end of the 13th century given a new life as the seat of the CSAC, the Study Center and Communication Archive of the University of Parma, which holds a collection of over twelve million items from the sectors of visual art, architecture and design, photography, advertising graphics, comics, fashion, and media in general, mainly from the twentieth century in Italy. An archive that is unique in Europe and characterized by a multi-faceted scenario of materials and expressions, autonomous paths or semantic interlacings, linguistic chains and contaminations. This book tells of the methodical design process in the last phase of the architectural restoration and layout of the complex where the various components involved, i.e. the art collections, the iconic historical value of the abbey, the museum visit, the activities and experiences to exploit the place, open also to the public at large, help determine a project dialectic aimed at defining a brand-new typology: that of a university-run archiv e museum-workshop.
