Nel 1923, il 12 di giugno, Croce tiene una conferenza all'assemblea generale della Società napoletana di storia patria. La trascrizione, subito in "Napoli nobilissima", III, 1922-1923, quindi in Uomini e cose della vecchia Italia, Bari, Laterza, 1927, è ora reperibile da Adelphi, 2006, con bella postfazione di Giuseppe Calasso, e per medesima intitolazione dell'originario intervento crociano: Un paradiso abitato da diavoli.
