Certain scientific-technical aspects of the CANDU nuclear energy system are discussed. Major emphasis is placed on the fuel cycle, thorium breeding, heat and mass transfer, safety, and environmental impact. The analysis is based on a critical review of the published literature. Both qualitative and quantitative aspects are discussed and subsequently summarized.
