Abstract

Il pittore I.P Jakovlev (1817-1884) nel 1847 compie un viaggio in Italia e raccoglie le proprie impressioni in un volume, accolto con favore dalla critica russa che apprezza la scelta dell’autore di non soffermarsi soltanto sulle bellezze artistiche delle città e dei luoghi visitati, ma cerca di comprendere anche gli aspetti prosaici della penisola. Nel saggio su Milano lo sguardo di Jakovlev è orientato ad indagare in presa diretta lo spazio cittadino, ad osservare gli ambiti in cui si svolge la vita quotidiana, descrivendo le abitudini e i comportamenti degli abitanti. Un approccio che, privilegiando il punto di vista della vita rispetto a una raffigurazione della penisola in chiave estetica, mette inevitabilmente in discussione i modelli convenzionali di rappresentazione degli italiani. Questo non significa che l’autore non rimanga affascinato dai monumenti, dalle chiese o dai musei. Grande appassionato d’opera, è un assiduo frequentatore del Teatro alla Scala, ma non per questo trascura il popolare teatro delle marionette, il Fiando o Gerolamo, allora famoso in tutta Europa. Le note al testo aiutano a ricostruire la topografia della Milano della metà dell’Ottocento, rintracciando i luoghi indicati dall’autore, ormai scomparsi o trasformati, e illustrando elementi culturali e storici propri dell’epoca.
