Musa pedestre. Storia e interpretazione della satira in Roma antica

Abstract

Traduzione e riadattamento dall'edizione inglese (K. Freudenburg, ed., The Cambridge Companion to Roman Satire, CUP, Cambridge 2005) a cura di A. Cucchiarelli.

Translation from the English edition (K. Freudenburg, ed., The Cambridge Companion to Roman Satire, CUP, Cambridge 2005), edited by A. Cucchiarelli. Chapter 3, "Persio. Il satirico oscuro" by A. Cucchiarelli is a revised and expanded version of the original chapter. Chapter 8, "Come si legge la satira romana" by A. Cucchiarelli (pp. 167-202, 242-244) was written for the Italian edition. In the volume the various aspects of Roman satire are studied in their cultural and historical context. Individual authors are analyzed in the salient aspects of their satirical production (Ennius, Lucilius, Horace, Persius, and Juvenal). Particular attention is devoted to literary models (comedy, diatribe, but also the epic and tragedy), to satire as literary criticism, and to the ritual context of the satirical aggression in the Roman society.
