Bir Vakıf Şartı Olarak Atina Balı Meselesi

Abstract

In Ottoman tradition, as an empire of waqfs, water would be distributed by the hands of religious endowments. Sebils or public water fountains built by those endowments would meet the essential need of society for water. These fountains would run water at ordinary times but on Ramadan nights for the ones who fast, they would run with sherbet which was one of the most important drinks in Ottoman era. Sherbet, however, would be made ofhoney untill8111 century due to sugar's being scarce and difficult to find. If the season is summer, snow would be added to it to make it chilled. Here, in this article, a waqf stipulation of the sherbet's being made with honey of Athens in Eminonu New Mosque's public water fountain in its complex is discussed. What is meant by the term "Honey of Athens" is sometimes not understood or misunderstood. In this article, it is explained by examining inscriptions of endowment, the archival documents of the era and other sources.
