Abstract

In this paper we analyze and discuss two new secondary burials from the Arroyo Seco 2 archaeological site and we present new 14C evidence which places them in early Holocene times. They are the earliest evidence of this kind of inhumation in this region. Secondary burials are common in Pampean and northern Patagonian archaeological sites and along with formal areas of inhumation that have been associated with the social complexity that occurred during late Holocene times in the Pampas. This hypothesis is discussed in the light of the new Arroyo Seco findings and in relation with this burial practices in South America.
