Abstract

The aim of this article is to describe the use of multilevel models based on PISA 2012 data. The paper contains a summary of the main aspects of the technique and –at the same time- three different models are estimated using as a dependent variable the students performance. The main interest is focused on analyzing how this kind of models provide useful and valid tools to analyze Social Science’s data, and on considering multilevel models when data has been gathered after using multiple level sampling techniques. In this case, results indicate that it is relevant to consider the hierarchical structure of the data, acknowledging a second level that groups several members (students are the first level and schools are the second one). These multilevel models, when appropriate, provide better estimations and explain part of the variability that exists because of differences in second level unities, which would be hidden if the estimation was run with ordinary least squares.
